How to hire a Content Writer

Content writers write the words that shape how readers see your company. That includes long articles, landing pages, lifecycle emails, social posts and more. Good writing builds trust and gets people to act. Bad writing makes your company look careless. Content writers often work across languages and change their tone for different readers. They also write a lot, on tight deadlines.

What is a Content Writer?

A Content Writer creates the written material a company publishes to attract, inform and persuade readers. This includes articles, guides, case studies, landing pages, newsletters and documentation. Most of good content writing happens before the typing. The writer decides what is worth saying to a specific reader. They research enough to say something true that the reader did not already know. Then they structure it so a reader who skims still gets the point.

The hiring challenge

Writer portfolios can mislead you, because writers know how to polish their samples. The best piece in a portfolio may have gone through five rounds of edits with a senior editor. The real test is different. Can the candidate write good work in your voice, within your limits, on a tight deadline? Also, many content writers write well but research poorly. They can write beautifully and say very little. Your interview needs to test both writing skill and substance.

What to look for in a Content Writer

Four traits matter. Clarity: can they explain a hard idea in simple words without talking down to the reader? Range of voice: can they shift from formal to casual depending on the reader? Research skill: can they write about a topic they do not know well? That means doing research and interviewing experts. Editing instinct: can they cut their own work hard and remove every word that is not needed?

Also check three more things. Are they comfortable writing in the kind of English your readers use? American and British English each have their own rules. Can they localize content, with references, examples and cultural details that fit your readers? And do they have SEO experience if the role needs it? Many content roles mix content marketing with search engine optimization.

Common mistakes when hiring Content Writers

Judging by the portfolio alone. A portfolio shows the best work after many edits. Give the candidate a timed writing task to see what they write in real conditions. The gap between the polished portfolio and the first draft shows their true skill level.

Not testing research skill. Some writers can only write about topics they already know. They get stuck when you need content on a new subject. Ask them to write about something new to them. See whether they ask good questions or turn in shallow content.

Hiring for volume over quality. A writer who turns in 10 average articles a week is worth less than one who turns in 3 excellent ones. Be clear about what you value and test for it.

FAQ

Content Writer hiring questions

What does a content writer do?
They research and write pieces to a brief and a publishing calendar. First they learn who the reader is and why they would search for the topic. They interview in-house experts or customers when the subject needs it. Then they draft, add headings for readers who skim and edit to the house style. They add internal links and metadata and revise after review. Many also publish in the CMS and update older pieces that have gone stale.
What is the difference between a content writer and a copywriter?
A content writer informs at length. They write articles, guides and resources that build trust and search traffic over time. A copywriter persuades in few words. They write ads, landing pages, emails and product copy where every word pushes toward an action. The skills overlap, but the instincts differ. Few writers are equally good at both. A common mistake is asking a long-form writer for ad copy and then deciding they cannot write.
What is the difference between a content writer and a technical writer?
A technical writer writes documentation for people who use a product. That means reference pages, how-to guides, API docs and release notes. The goal is accuracy and easy lookup. A content writer writes marketing material for people still deciding whether to care. Technical writing needs deeper product accuracy and patience for precise detail. Content writing needs more feel for the reader and for telling a story.
What is SEO writing and how is it different?
SEO writing answers a specific search well enough that search engines show it. It covers the question the searcher really has. It uses clear headings and handles related subtopics. It earns links by being truly useful. It no longer means stuffing and repeating keywords. Modern search engines ignore that at best and punish it at worst. In practice, good SEO writing is just clear writing that answers a known question.
Has AI replaced content writers?
AI has replaced one kind of work, and the role still exists. Generic articles pieced together from what is already online now cost almost nothing to make. Search engines and readers both care less about them. Some things have become more valuable, because AI cannot make them alone. These include original research and real interviews with customers and experts. They also include a clear point of view and the judgment to know what is worth publishing. Writers who only offer volume are in trouble. Writers who offer specific, original material are doing well.
What skills does a content writer need?
First, clear thinking. That is the real limit, since muddled writing almost always comes from muddled thinking. They need research skill, including interviewing people. They need structure, so a reader who skims gets the argument from the headings. They need to judge what the reader already knows. They need to edit their own work down and understand how search works. They need enough subject depth to notice when a source is wrong. And they must hit deadlines, which is what sets professional writers apart from merely good ones.
How is a content writer measured?
It depends on the role. Common measures are organic traffic and rankings for their pieces, and engagement like scroll depth and time on page. Others are sign-ups or sales the content helped bring in, links earned and how steadily they publish. Be careful, though. Content results are slow, and they also depend on distribution and the product. Judging a writer on one quarter's traffic usually measures timing more than the writing.
How do you test a content writer in hiring?
A portfolio shows range. It does not prove who wrote it or how, and both are now easy to hide. The best single filter is a short, paid test on a real topic in your field. It shows research depth, structure and whether they ask good questions before writing. Ask them to explain why they outlined it that way. Then give feedback on the draft and see how they revise. That tells you more about working with them than the first draft does.
What interview questions should I ask a content writer?
Ask what they would need to know before writing about a topic in your industry. This shows who researches and who just rewords other articles. Ask how they decide a piece is not worth writing. Ask them to critique one of your current articles. Ask how they find original material when a subject is already well covered. And ask how they use AI tools. A good answer is specific about where AI helps and where they do not trust it.
