What is AI interviewing?

How voice AI interviewers work, why the call feels like a real conversation, and how it differs from a form.

By Janhavi Nagarhalli·October 2026

The one-sentence version

An AI interview is a voice conversation between a candidate and an AI interviewer. The AI listens to each answer and picks the next question based on what the candidate said. At the end, it writes a scorecard. There is no recruiter on the call and no form. The AI asks your set questions and adds follow-ups based on each answer.

The goal is to take first-round screening off your team, so people spend their time on the conversations that matter. It does not replace the people who hire.

Your team already knows what a strong answer sounds like. An AI interviewer takes that rubric and asks the questions. It listens closely and writes up notes for each skill. This is the same work a recruiter does on a phone screen. The difference is that it is open at any hour, for every applicant.

How it is different from a form

A form asks every candidate the same questions in the same order. It ignores what they just said. An AI interview listens and adjusts. If an answer is vague, the AI asks a follow-up question. If the candidate is strong, the AI digs deeper. If the candidate already covered a topic, the AI skips it.

Candidates feel heard. You also learn far more about each person than a form with fixed questions can tell you.

Forms have another problem. Candidates write as little as they can. A two-line answer could mean the person is weak, or that they just hate typing. Speaking removes that problem. Most people speak about three times faster than they type. Their tone, pace and word choice also tell you things that text never shows.

A vague answer, the follow-up question, and the specific answer it led to.
  • Follow-up questions based on the candidate's own words
  • The pace adjusts: slower for nervous candidates, faster for confident ones
  • Interruptions and "can you repeat that" are handled naturally
  • Each interview takes about 15 to 20 minutes

What the candidate experiences

The candidate picks up a phone call, or gets a link by email, text or WhatsApp. They tap once and start talking. The AI introduces itself, explains how the interview works and begins. At the end, the candidate hears a short summary and a thank-you.

They do not download anything, create an account or book a time slot. That makes it easy to finish, so more candidates complete an AI interview than show up for a booked phone screen.

Candidates can interview at midnight if that is when they are free. They can pause if the doorbell rings. It feels like a phone call, and that matters. Your best applicants often work full-time already and cannot take a 2 PM call.

What the recruiter gets

A few minutes after the candidate hangs up, a scorecard appears in the recruiter queue. Each skill has a score, a short written reason and a quote from the transcript. Recruiters can click the quote to hear that moment in the recording.

Your team can change any score and add a note. The AI gives advice, and your team makes the final call.

A recruiter reviewing 50 candidates does not need to listen to 50 interviews again. They skim the scorecards and play a few clips. They change scores where they disagree and move the top candidates forward. A full week of phone screens turns into a couple of hours of review.

Where AI interviews fit in a funnel

AI interviews work best as the first-round screen, where the phone screen used to sit. They run before the hiring manager gets involved. Your team moves the top scorers to a human interview and sends the rest a polite no.

For senior roles, an AI interview works as a pre-screen before a panel. Every candidate answers the same questions on communication, role fit and motivation. The panel can then spend its time on deeper topics.

AI interviews also suit internal moves in large companies, campus drives with hundreds of applicants and contract hiring where speed matters most. If you have more candidates than your team can call, AI interviews let you hear every one of them.

Objections we hear most

"Will candidates accept it?" In practice, many candidates prefer it to waiting for a phone screen. They like interviewing on their own time. Most say it feels more respectful than waiting weeks for a recruiter to call back.

"Is the AI biased?" Scores follow the rubric your hiring team writes, and the AI does not score age, gender or background. Check that scores are fair across candidate groups, and keep the final decision with people. Every candidate gets the same rubric and the same follow-up rules. Human screens vary more, because the conversation depends on which recruiter picks up the phone.

"What about accents and other languages?" Here, voice AI does better than web forms. Goodfit runs interviews in 14 languages and writes the scorecard in English. Candidates speak in the language they are most comfortable in, and the same rubric still applies. An accent does not count against anyone.

Frequently asked questions

How does an AI interview work?

The candidate picks up a phone call, or gets a link by email, text or WhatsApp, and starts talking. They have a voice conversation with an AI interviewer. The AI asks questions from your rubric, listens to each answer and asks follow-up questions. It then writes a scorecard with scores, reasons and quotes from the transcript.

Do candidates prefer AI interviews?

Many do. Candidates like interviewing on their own schedule, at any hour. They also do not have to wait weeks for a recruiter to call them back. There is no app to download and no time slot to book, so more people finish.

Is an AI interview the same as a video interview?

No. In a one-way video interview, the candidate records answers to set questions and nobody responds. An AI voice interview is a live conversation. The AI listens and asks follow-up questions based on what the candidate says.

Can AI interviews be held in other languages?

Yes. Goodfit runs interviews in 14 languages, including English, Arabic and Japanese. Candidates speak in the language they prefer. The hiring team gets the scorecard in English.

How accurate is AI interview scoring?

Scores follow the rubric your hiring team writes. Every score comes with a quote from the transcript and a link to that moment in the recording. Recruiters can check any score by listening, and change it if they disagree.
