How to hire an Account Executive

Account executives take a deal from qualified lead to closed-won. They run the whole sale and carry a quota. They give demos and negotiate contracts. They also manage buying decisions that involve many people.

What does AE stand for?

AE stands for Account Executive.

An Account Executive (AE) owns a deal from the first meeting to the signature. They take qualified leads and ask questions to learn the customer's problem and how they decide. They demo the product and build the business case. They win over all the people who have to agree. Then they negotiate terms and close. AEs carry their own quota. They are judged almost only on the revenue they close. Activity counts for little.

The hiring challenge

In AE interviews, how a candidate tells the story of a deal is everything. Resumes list quota numbers no one can check. What matters is whether the candidate can walk you through a deal step by step. Their logic should hold up when you ask follow-up questions. You only see the gap between a strong AE and an average one when you dig into details. A structured AI interview does that digging for every candidate.

What to look for in an Account Executive

Four traits matter. Deal mechanics (can they describe a deal stage by stage, with real details?). Qualification discipline (do they walk away from bad deals, or chase everything?). Selling to many people at once (can they win over procurement, their champion and the budget owner in the same deal?). Pipeline accuracy (can you trust their forecast, or do deals slip every quarter?).

For B2B sales, also check three things. Are they comfortable with long sales cycles? Enterprise deals can take 6 to 12 months. Can they build relationships at every level, with both the VP and the manager in the same deal? Do they report honestly, or do they pad the pipeline to look busy?

Common mistakes when hiring AEs

Believing the quota number on the resume. Most AE resumes say they beat quota. Ask where they ranked on the team and how big the deals were. A real top rep will know the details.

Not testing negotiation live. Give them a procurement roleplay. AEs who panic when pushed on price will panic on real deals too.

Hiring for a contact list. An AE who depends on friends in one industry may stall once those calls run out. Ask how they built pipeline in their last two quarters without help from old contacts.

FAQ

AE hiring questions

What does an account executive do?
An AE runs deals. They hold discovery calls to learn the customer's problem and what happens if they do nothing. They give demos that fit that problem. They build a business case the buyer can take to their own finance team. They find and manage everyone who has to say yes. They handle procurement and legal, and negotiate price and terms. They give their manager an honest forecast. Between deals, they find new leads in their own accounts. They help fill their own pipeline instead of waiting on SDRs.
What is the difference between an account executive and an account manager?
An account executive wins new business. An account manager keeps and grows current customers. The AE is measured on new closed revenue. The AM is measured on retention, renewals and growth in accounts already signed. Some companies merge the two jobs under one title. Ask about this in the interview. Finding new customers and growing old ones suit different people and different pay plans.
What is the difference between an SDR and an account executive?
An SDR starts conversations and books qualified meetings. The AE runs the deal from that meeting to signature. SDRs are measured on meetings and pipeline created. AEs are measured on closed revenue. SDR to AE is the normal promotion in software sales. The hardest part of the move is patience. Closing means working fewer deals in more depth. That is the opposite of what made someone a good SDR.
How is an account executive's quota and OTE structured?
An AE carries a yearly or quarterly quota in closed revenue. On-target earnings, or OTE, is the base salary plus the commission they earn if they hit that number exactly. A common split is about half base and half variable. Commission often rises faster above quota. Ask three questions. What share of the team hit quota last year? How is quota set? Does commission pay at signature, at invoice or at collection?
What skills does an account executive need?
Discovery discipline comes first. Deals are won or lost on whether the AE understood the problem. They need business-case thinking, since big purchases get approved in someone else's spreadsheet. They need to build relationships with more than one person in the account. A deal with only one contact dies when that person changes jobs. They need to negotiate without discounting by reflex. They need to forecast honestly, which is really a judgment skill. And they need the grit to work a deal for months and still lose it.
What experience do you need to become an account executive?
The most common path is one to two years as an SDR or BDR, then an internal promotion. That is why companies hire so many SDRs. Other paths start in customer success, solutions or sales engineering. Some AEs come from selling in a nearby industry. Employers want proof that you have closed deals. They look at deal sizes, cycle length and win rate. They want a track record you can break down in detail.
What interview questions should I ask an account executive?
Ask them to walk through their largest closed deal from start to end. Ask them to name the stages, the people involved and where it nearly died. That is hard to fake when you ask follow-up questions. Ask what they do when the champion goes quiet for two weeks. Ask how they decide a deal is not worth pursuing. Ask for a discount and see whether they trade for something or just give in. Then ask them to forecast a live deal from their current pipeline. Ask why they are that confident.
How do you screen account executive candidates efficiently?
Quota results and deal sizes are the claims you most need to test. They are also the ones a resume inflates. A reference check rarely settles them. A structured first round works better than a chat about their past. Use a live discovery scenario and an objection under time pressure. Score every candidate the same way. You will see who finds the problem first and who just pitches. The hiring manager then only meets candidates whose selling you have already seen.
