Comparison

HackerRank alternative: per-candidate pricing, and the rest of your hiring included

Both run automated coding tests with hidden cases and plagiarism detection. The differences are the pricing model, the attempt caps, and whether the platform covers anything other than engineering.

The short answer

The short version: HackerRank is the deeper coding-assessment product, with a larger question library and more languages. Goodfit is the better fit if engineering is only part of your hiring, if your candidate volume moves around month to month, or if you want the coding score to sit on the same record as the interview and the pipeline stage. If you hire engineers only, at steady volume, and already have an ATS you like, HackerRank is a reasonable place to stay.

Pick Goodfit if

  • More than about a third of your open roles are non-engineering
  • Your candidate volume is seasonal and annual attempt caps do not fit it
  • You want the coding score next to the interview and the pipeline, not in a separate dashboard
  • You need to run a screen this week without a procurement cycle

Pick HackerRank if

  • You hire engineers almost exclusively, at steady and predictable volume
  • You need the deepest possible question library and 55+ language coverage
  • You already have an ATS and interview stack you are happy with
  • Your assessment program is mature enough to justify per-seat licensing

HackerRank alternatives - frequently asked questions

What is the best HackerRank alternative?
It depends on what is pushing you off HackerRank. If the problem is cost at variable volume or the fact that it only covers engineering, Goodfit is the closest fit because it prices per candidate and screens technical and non-technical roles together. If the problem is that you want evidence of how a candidate worked, Codility records a working timeline. If you only need a live pairing environment, CoderPad does that one thing better than anything else.
Why do teams look for a HackerRank alternative?
Three recurring reasons. The per-seat plans include a fixed number of attempts a year, and a single campus drive or a busy quarter exhausts them, after which each extra attempt is billed. It covers engineering only, so any team hiring sales, support, or operations at the same time needs a second tool. And the question library is well known to candidates, who practise on it before interviews, which erodes the signal on the most common questions.
Is Goodfit cheaper than HackerRank?
It depends entirely on volume, and the honest answer is that the models differ rather than one being universally cheaper. HackerRank charges per seat annually with a capped number of attempts; Goodfit charges per candidate with no seats or caps. At low, steady volume a seat plan can be cheaper per test. At variable or high volume, the overage fees on a capped plan are usually where the real cost appears. Work out your actual monthly candidate count before comparing list prices.
Does Goodfit have as many questions as HackerRank?
No. HackerRank has the largest library in the category and we would not claim otherwise. Goodfit's library is smaller and calibrated to role families rather than to competitive programming, so a backend candidate gets service design and error handling rather than an algorithm puzzle. If raw library breadth is your deciding factor, HackerRank wins that comparison.
Can I migrate my HackerRank assessments to Goodfit?
Custom questions can be recreated, and most teams take the migration as a chance to replace algorithm puzzles with tasks closer to the job. Historical candidate results stay in HackerRank; there is no direct import of past scores, which is true of every platform move in this category.
